notes: -Introduced Species: native to the lowlands of northern South America to southern Central America (Howard 1998) introduced into Texas in 1983 (Neck 1984) into the Comal River in New Braunfels (Howard 1998). May have been introduced in the pet trade; specimens were sold as M. rotula, or from a university research source (TPWD 1992b) -live for at least 2 years (Howard 1998) -most abundant in aquatic macrophyte vegetation and heavily preyed on by crayfish (Howard 1998) |
